What Do We Do?

The Southport Writers’ Circle has been going since 1971 when the illustrious Joan Nicholson started a group whose purpose was the encouragement of writing in every form.

Since then our goal remains unchanged but our membership has become increasingly diverse, welcoming experienced and amateur writers alike, drawing on poets, prosewriters, playwrights, article smiths, novelists, and many other nuanced forms of the written word.

Should you wish to join us, know that we are a friendly and welcoming bunch and all we ask of you is that you are a writer who is willing to listen to critique and always strive to polish and share your work.

Please check our current meeting details on the Contact Us page and feel free to send us an email should you want to know more.

We do not insist you read the first time (unless you want to) but we encourage you to pop in and have a taste of what we have to offer.

We look forwards to seeing you!

  1. Hi,

I am currently the artistic director at EDDA ( formerly Ainsdale Library ) and we run classes for adults with learning disabilities. Some of our more able clients have been taking part in creative writing classes with me BUT I am not a writer and they need someone with far greater skills than I have. Therefore, I am looking for a writing tutor to run a session here at EDDA on Tuesdays 10.30am-12:00pm – Fee £30 per session
I hope you can help me.

    1. Hi,

I live in London at the moment but will be moving to Southport at the end of December. If you are still looking for a tutor then, I’d be very interested.

I would like to book in to your free session at Cranberry café on Sunday 24th May from 2 – 4 pm. I have been attending the WEA creative writers course held at the Salvation Army and am interested in writing for a hobby, particularly poetry

  3. Hiya,

I’ve recently moved up to Southport for uni so I have no real knowledge of the area aside from Lords Street. I was wondering if someone would be able to give me directions at all?

Also, I was just wondering a bit more about the sessions i.e. how long they last, what kinds of things do you guys do etc.

I hope that’s not too much trouble!

    Thank you for your time,
